The CONNECT program will provide homework assistance, extra academic support, peer interaction, enrichment and youth development for incoming sixth grade students. Students will be invited to the program based on need and academic profile. Reading and math support will be the main focus along with enrichment opportunities in Chinese culture and language, leadership training, service learning projects, and college exploration and visits. Parents will also meet with parent facilitators to learn about adolescent development, share concerns, and learn skills and strategies for communication, relationship-building and literacy support for their children. At the end of their 6th grade year, CONNECT students are expected to reach their academic benchmarks in reading and math, advance to 7th grade, report increased self-confidence, self-esteem, and stronger bonds with their peers and school staff.
